Some Trivia

  • He was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C.
  • He is credited with several inventions, including the swivel chair, a pedometer, a machine to make fiber from hemp, a letter-copying machine, and the lazy susan.
  • He was the first President to shake hands instead of bow.
  • He was able to read Greek, Latin, French and English.
  • He was one of only two presidents to sign the Declaration of Independence.  John Adams was the other. 
  • He was one of three presidents to die on July 4th.  John Adams and James Monroe were the others. 
  • Jefferson and Adams both died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1826.  Adams's dying words were "Thomas Jefferson survives".  Jefferson, however, died a few hours earlier.
