What is the astronomical meaning of the Zodiac?

Here is what Science Net has to say:

"In astronomical terms, the Zodiac is a series of twelve (or more accurately, thirteen) constellations which the Sun seems to pass through each year. The Sun and stars actually stay fixed in space, but the Earth's orbit round the Sun makes it appear against a changing background as our point of view alters. As well as rising and setting each day, the Sun seems to move on a circular path around the sky, called the 'ecliptic'."

"The ecliptic passes through thirteen constellations - the twelve traditional Zodiac signs, and 'Ophiuchus' - the Serpent Bearer (an ancient Greek figure of a man wrestling a snake). Astrologers have always ignored this 'extra sign' - these days they tend to ignore the actual constellations anyway, and divide the sky into twelve equal segments or 'houses', regardless of the different sizes of the Zodiac constellations."

"The Zodiac became the heart of astrology because the Sun and planets - the only regularly moving objects in a fixed sky - were confined within it. The ecliptic line represents an extension of the plane of the Earth's orbit out through space - and is considered as the central plane of the Solar System. Because the Solar System is fairly flat, the other planets never appear far from the ecliptic either, and so they only move in the Zodiac constellations."

"Of course, the signs of the Zodiac have no special importance to astronomers - they are simply defined as regions of the sky like any others. Astrologers claim that the movement of the Sun and planets 'through' the constellations can effect events on Earth, but ignore the fact that we now know the true distances of the planets and stars from the Earth - there can be no connection, and even the closest planets cannot exert any influence over Earth. What's more, we also know that the constellations themselves are only 'line of sight' effects, with no real connection between the stars in them."

"But it's fun," you say!

Ok, you know there's nothing to it, but you still want to know "what you're like" according to the stars.  Well, here's a tiny bit of info, according to some astrological wizards and/or gurus in various newspapers, magazines, etc.:
