The Ninja Who Went to the Jungle

or

Never Travel Alone!

An Interactive Story
Once there was a boy named David who loved to read adventure books.  David's best friend was his neighbor, Harry.  One day, David and Harry were playing outside near the forest.  All of a sudden . . . (1)

. . . they were attacked a horde of rampant ninjas! Rampant ninjas are difficult to negotiate with, but when they saw David they dropped their katanas before them and bowed most politely.  Harry's eyes goggled so badly that one discovered the other and wouldn't stop staring at it.  David turned to the ninjas and. . . (2)

. . . asked them,"Why are you attacking me? Have I done something to harm you?"

The leader of the Rampant Ninjas stepped forward with eyes burning with rage. "Cowards," he muttered to his followers who were still bowing. Then he whirled to face David. "Why have you entered my land?" he demanded.

"Excuse me?" David questioned. "You are saying this is your property?"

The leader nodded. "We have come to take it."

"This is not your property! This is my father's land!" David cried.

The leader grinned mockingly, showing his rotten teeth. Then, he . . . (3)

pulled out a sword faster than the eye could see and sliced the buttons off the boy's coat!

"See how easily I could kill you?" the ninja sneered. (4)

David stared at the spaces where his buttons had once been sitting. Slowly he raised his eyes to meet the ninja's, and he glared.

"I liked that shirt," he growled menacingly. "You'll have to pay for my new buttons!"

The ninja cackled. "Ninjas do not pay for buttons!" he boomed. "We slice them off, and force taxpayers to pay compensation!"

Harry cleared his throat. "This is all getting rather violent, don't you think?" He held up his hands, attempting to calm the ninjas, and David. "Besides, I think my eyes are about to fall out - do you think you could do something a little less astonishing?"

The ninjas grinned at each other.  "Are you thinking what I'm thinking, B1?" the lead ninja asked his subordinate.  I think I am, B2," replied the subordinate ninja.  All of a sudden . . . (5)

A gigantic bird circled them from above, cawing at them. A figure was sitting on the bird and as the ninja's looked up, they shielded their eyes from the bright sunlight.

David gaped as Harry quickly tried to use this distraction as an advantage. Grabbing David's wrist, he dragged him behind a bush and picked up a few stones and started throwing them.

A ninja howled, immediately causing the other to spin around quickly and glare at the spot the boys had been standing.

"Where have they gone?" He looked around them, his eyes darting here and there.

"Ouch! Make them stop!" the ninja nursed his finger as he jumped around trying to avoid the rocks.

Just then the ninja noticed a movement in the bushes. Smiling, he walked towards the spot where the boys were hiding, too busy finding stones to be taking notice of the slow and steady footsteps towards them . . . . (6)

Questions?
Until March, 2005, it was possible to fill out a form and submit an entry to the interactive stories on BlackDog.  Those entries appeared immediately on the internet.  Unfortunately, some people abused the stories and wrote some really ugly things, choosing to ignore all the pleas and warnings that this is a site for kids and that submissions to the stories should always be clean and appropriate.  The stories were checked on a regular basis, but no matter how often the stories were checked, someone always managed to get in something nasty.  Time constraints make it impossible to constantly monitor these stories, so this new method came into being.

When you click on the link above, you will go to a new page where you can submit an addition to the story.  Your submission will be reviewed and, if it is approved, it will be added to the story.  The final decision on whether your submission is approved or not is mine and mine alone.

Some helpful writing hints:
Here is a link to a helpful page on how to write a story.  It's a good place to start.

The idea is to write one paragraph that continues this story line.  You do not need to think up a new story.  Neither do you need to try and finish this story.  Write your paragraph so that it leaves something for the next writer to add to, and keep in mind that it should be interesting enough so that someone else will want to add something to what you've written.

Spelling and grammar count in the real world, and they definitely count here.  Story submissions with lots of words misspelled and incorrect grammar will not be accepted.  So, read what you've written and check for spelling and grammar mistakes before you send it.  That being said, if you send something in and realize you've made a couple of mistakes, just fix it and submit it again.

If your paragraph is accepted, you'll see it posted on the internet with your name under the "Story Tellers." Check back in a couple of days to see if it was been accepted.

Note:  You will be asked for your email address when you submit your entry.  No email addresses will be posted on the internet, or saved anywhere, or given, sold, or even shown to anyone.  Your email address is needed to let you know that your entry was successfully submitted and in case there's a question about your entry.

Have fun!
